About the Trust

The Adrienne Coles Memorial Trust (ACMT) was setup in the will of the late Derek Coles, in memory of his wife, Adrienne Coles, who died of a Parkinson's related condition (specifically, MSA) in 1991. You can read an obituary of Derek.

Our Aims

Legally (from the will), the aims of the trust are:
"...for the development of Parkinson's Disease Information and related material on the Internet ..."

The trustees feel it is important for organisations such as ours to be focussed and clear about their objectives, and to stick to them. We restrict ourselves to PD information on the Internet, but within that we are willing to engage in any activity or programme that brings about a more vibrant Parkinson's Disease community on the Internet.

Our current plans are to work with established organisations, such as the Parkinson's Disease Society, with the intention of encouraging them to be more active on the Internet than they would normally be. However, this doesn't mean we won't be doing other things - so if you've got a good idea, tell us!.

Our beliefs

We believe that everyone with Parkinson's has something to contribute; Parkinson's is unusual in that it varies greatly from person to person so it is difficult to generalise - everyone is on their own journey. Each individual will discover new aspects to their condition, and develop new ways of coping. There is great benefit, both practical and emotional, from the support of fellow travelers on the Parkinson's journey, and often the most valuable information is lost when passed through the medical machine.

We believe The Internet empowers People With Parkinson's (PWP) to learn and take control of their condition. Drugs and other medical treatments can only go part way to alleviating a chronic condition; much can be gained from information and self-exploration. Our mission is to enable this, by supporting resources on The Internet which empower PWPs and anyone else involved to tame Parkinson's.

Our Activities

The trust's work breaks down into 3 areas:

  • Providing funding for selected projects.
  • Supporting various Parkinson's projects by doing the technical aspects, allowing them to concentrate on the Parkinson's Disease issues. This may be hosting (with NIP) the project on the web, writing an application for the web, or designing a web site.
  • Advising groups on Parkinson's/Internet related issues.

You can read more about our current projects on this site.

Donations

Donations gratefully accepted; whilst we were started with a legacy from Derek, any donations will help us expand our activities.
